What Each Phase Involves
Design
Purpose: To provide system details and drawings to be utilized for review, approval and instruction in engineering, fabrication, construction, permitting, and operations.
- All Drawings Must Include:
- Drawings to scale with sufficient detail to achieve the purpose above.

- Municipal regulations

Fire Letter
Purpose: To ensure the fire suppression system is adequate, based on racking structure design and commodities being stored within it. An engineer stamped letter is typically required to be submitted with pallet racking permit application.
Responsibilities:
- Engineer review of the building, rack structure, fire suppression system, and commodities being stored to ensure adequacy and adherence to the National Fire Code of Canada
- Requirement under the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
- Engineer stamped letter required for permitting
- Engineering stamped hydraulic calculation
Required submissions to fire engineer for review and calculations
- Rack structure as noted in the design section
- Commodity survey (fire suppression questionnaire)
- Fire Suppression specifications, drawings and calculations
- Building key plan

Slab Letter
Purpose: To ensure the foundation or slab is adequate for the post loads and load combinations generated by the racking structure Responsibilities:
- Engineering review of the slab, or alternate foundation, to ensure adequacy according to the building codes and CSA standards
- Engineer stamped letter required for permitting
- Required submissions to structural engineer for review and calculations
- Structural slab or alternate foundation drawings
- Racking drawings as noted in design section
- Post load information
- Geotechnical information
*If structural drawings are not available for the slab, the design can be determined through coring and/or floor scan*
Site Verification
Purpose: To ensure the accuracy of site drawings and measurements provided by the client for design, prior to finalizing drawings and connections of the racking structure.

Obtain all necessary documentation according to municipal requirements such as:

Procurement

Logistics

Transportation
Purpose: To transport materials and equipment from suppliers/vendors to the project site safely and efficiently
Responsibilities:
Coordinate transport logistics
- Select suitable transport, modes and routes
- Ensure loads are adequately packaged and protected for transport
- Ensure materials are securely loaded onto transport vehicles
- Communicate to transport details to vendors and job sites
Manage Logistics
- Arrange pickup, transport, and delivery
- Schedule resources for loading and unloading
- Track and expedite deliveries
- Ensure proper documentation for importation
- Notify of any delays so crews can be rescheduled
- Verify adequate material transport coverage
- File insurance claims when necessary
- Issue purchase orders with carrier instructions
- Manage invoicing and additional costs

Unloading & Staging
Responsibilities:

Receiving
Responsibilities:
- Verify material quantities and description against BOL and packing list
- Document shortages or overages
- Inspect & document obvious and potentially concealed damages
- Take photos of materials
- Submit & file receiving documents
Installation
Purpose: To install pallet racking systems at the project site according to approved design and specifications.
Responsibilities:
- Prioritize safety
- Review approved design drawings and specifications for installation requirements.
- Prepare site for installation, including layout and assembly of components.
- Install pallet racking components according to manufacturer guidelines, engineered design and industry standards.
- Ensure level, plumb, square, and anchoring of racking system.
- Conduct quality inspections during and after installation to verify compliance.
- Prepare a “punch list” of deficiencies to be remedied
- Identify discrepancies between design and installation, i.e. as-built
Site Services
Purpose: To install pallet racking systems at the project site according to approved design and specifications.
Responsibilities: Provide necessary site services as required such as:
- Power
- Lighting
- Waste management
- Lunchroom
- Toilettes
As-Built Notations
Purpose: To ensure final drawings accurately represent the actual as-built condition(s).
Responsibilities:
Document deviations or discrepancies from IFC drawings
Verify compliance with regulatory requirements
Photographic documentation of the completed installation
Update drawings as required.
Capacity Signage
Purpose: To provide visual instructions regarding the capacities and safe operation of the system.
Responsibilities:
- Maximum load capacities
- Storage levels / elevations
Labeling
Purpose: To provide identification of aisle/ row/ bin locations
Responsibilities:
- Clear, prominent lettering.
- Consistent labeling scheme.
- High-visibility and readability
- Materials suitable for the environment
Ongoing Inspection
Purpose: Ensure that inspections are conducted to meet regulatory requirements and client risk tolerances. *
Responsibilities:
Perform regular internal inspections
Utilize “Qualified Person” to perform expert inspections.
Detail necessary corrective actions
Record remediation efforts
